An Evening with the Quarrymen

at St. Peter’s Church Hall, Woolton Fri 28 Aug

St P L
St P F

The Quarrymen, with originals Colin Hanton and Rod Davis from 1956, plus Henry Duff Lowe and David Bedford - and with guest guitarist Chrisse Usenius - once again made the rafters ring in St. Peter’s Church Hall, the very place where John Lennon met Paul McCartney almost 70 years ago!

Liverpool Museum Saturday 25 July:

Yes, at last the Quarrymen - Colin, Rod, David, Henry and guest guitarist Chrisse Usenius - appeared in a museum, but fortunately not as exhibits! In conjunction with The Cavern Club and the National Museums Liverpool’s Summer of Sound they appeared on Saturday 25 July. Our good friend Clark Gilmour opened the show, then we had an interview session led by David Bedford in which we got to tell some stories about the early days of the Quarrymen before playing our set to an enthusiastic audience.

Our first ever gig in the North-East of England took place on Sat 9 May at the Alnwick Playhouse Theatre, We did a short
Q & A session then moved on to two 45 minute sets. It’s a beautiful theatre and we had a great audience

We were very taken with the town of Alnwick and its castle, very well worth a visit!

Frank Griffith - Jazz Cavern

On Tuesday 31 March Rod and Colin dropped in to See our old friend Frank Griffith at LCR FM. Colin had already appeared on Frank’s show several times, but it was the first time Rod had been able to make it to the studio as he lives down in the smoke. We chatted for an hour or more and you can find the programme by following the link below. Select the 31 March edition.

Hunter Davies’ 90th Birthday!

Having played for Hunter Davies’ 80th birthday at The Groucho in 2016, the Quarrymen were delighted to be asked
to play at Hunter’s 90th in January 2026.

We have already put him in the diary for his 100th in January 2036!

Here’s wishing Hunter a great big

Quarrymen Live CD

On Sunday 8 March 2020 the Quarrymen - Colin, Len, Chas and Rod - recorded a live CD in front of a specially invited audience. This took place at the Penny Lane Development Centre in Penny Lane itself, which is where Colin held his book launch in 2018. It’s a great little venue and Julie and her staff made us all most welcome. The CD captures the atmosphere of a Quarrymen live performance, with their - often rambling - introductions and asides, as well as a selection of significant songs from the Quarrymen’s history. The performance was recorded by Alan Lewis of Glass Studios, Birkenhead, who also produced the master.

1: Maggie May
2: Rock Island Line
3: Lost John
4: Freight Train
5: Matchbox
6: Puttin’ on the Style

  7: Mean Woman Blues

Great! So where can I buy a copy?

Colin Hall - “The Songs The Beatles Gave Away”

Colin Hall, the curator of “Mendips”, who collaborated with Colin Hanton on his biography, has recently published a brand new book about the songs the Beatles gave away. However, it’s about a great deal more than that because Colin has included a whole swathe of carefully researched background material which is totally fascinating.

“The Songs The Beatles Gave Away” is a hardback, 528 pages, is published by Great Northern Books, and is available from them price £19.99 including UK p&p.

Add £5.00 per book for Europe and £10.00 for overseas.

Signed copies are available on request at no extra charge.

Rod Davis Youtube interview:

Whilst you are on Youtube, you might be able  to find time to listen to some of this interview. We had been talking to the Beatles fans in Lima, Peru with a view to appearing at their Beatles Festival in January 2026. However for various reasons this was not possible, but the main organiser, Roberto from Beatles Peru, conducted an interview with Rod Davis which you can find on Youtube at this address!
