The Quarrymen in 2016:

Dec 7 Seville, Spain Rod Davis

On Tuesday 7 December in Seville, southern Spain, Quarryman Rod Davis gave his 90 minute talk entitled “John Lennon - The Quarrymen Days” as part of the “XXVII Homenaje a los Beatles” organised by Enrique Sanchez, leader of the Spanish Beatles tribute band “Los Escarabajos”

Delivered in Spanish -  Rod learnt to speak the language at Quarry Bank School and subsequently taught in Liverpool for a few years - his talk was illustrated by slides of fifties Liverpool and the early days of the group and was punctuated by songs with the guitar as the story unfolded. The weather in Seville was fantastic and a large quantity of beer and wine was consumed. Many thanks to Enrique and his friends for a great convention.

Hunter Davies’ 80th birthday party::

On Jan 7 at the Groucho Club in London’s Soho the author and journalist Hunter Davies, famous amongst Beatle fans for his biographies of both the Beatles and the Quarrymen (and very many more besides) held his 80th birthday party with family and friends. Hunter invited the Quarrymen to come and help him celebrate and Colin, Rod and bassist Chas Newby were able to make it down to London and delighted the assembled guests with their mixture of skiffle and rock ‘n’ roll. The guys have played for Hunter several times previously and it’s always a fun gig. We hope you had a Happy Birthday, Hunter. It certainly looked that way from where we were standing!
