Welcome to the Quarrymen’s Official Website

The Quarrymen in 2019:

Mexico City Dec 1 - 9

For some years Ricardo from the Beatles Fan club in Mexico - Todos Juntos Ahora - All together now! has been planning to get the Quarrymen to appear at his annual Beatles Festival and finally it all came together this year for the 25th edition of the Festival. Or to be strictly accurate - most of it came together - because at the last minute Len and Colin had to pull out for health reasons and so it was left to Rod and Chas to fly the flag for the Quarrymen with two borrowed Mexican musicians, Paco on lead guitar and Jimmy on drums. After spending a couple of days sightseeing with our wonderful guide and minder Julian, which included a visit to the Pyramids, a trip on the Xochimilco Canals, lunch with the Minister of Tourism and an open top bus tour of Mexico City with Beatles tribute band Morsa (Walrus) and a load of Beatles fans,  the guys played four gigs on the Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday to some of the most enthusiastic crowds we have ever experienced.

Altogether a most fabulous visit with the chance to meet some wonderful Beatles fans, many of whom hope to visit Liverpool for Beatle Week in August 2020. Our grateful thanks go to Ricardo for his dedicated organisation, to Julian for taking care of us so well and of course to our two honorary Quarrymen, Paco & Jimmy, without whom we’d have been a duet! The Nerk Twins all over again??

On Sun 29 September Rod Davis appeared at Dublin’s newest venue -Lost Lane, off Grafton Street - where he told the story of the rise of Skiffle and the Origins of the Quarrymen. Spiced with Liverpool humour and sprinkled with songs - all illustrated with a selection of fascinating digital photographs.

Colin’s autobiog is being made into a documentary film  so in July we spent a day at Abbey Road Studios and here is Colin himself getting the feel of the drums.

With John Zambetti and Walter Egan of The Malibooz (we had met them in California) we played a couple of numbers during their Cavern set and enjoyed a meal with them afterwards.

Estartit - Costa Brava 13 July

On Saturday 13 July the Quarrymen appeared at the Estartit Beatles Weekend on the Costa Brava in Spain.  Estartit is a beautiful little fishing village with probably the most spectacular open-air concert platform in Europe, the Espai Molinet, on the cliffs overlooking the sea. At night coloured lights play on the huge rock behind the stage to produce a totally magical scene! Also on the bill were the band Hey Bulldogs and George Harrison Tribute Here Comes de Songs.

Quarrymen on TV - twice in the same night!

In 2018 Billy Bragg published his fascinating book about the origins of Skiffle and Rock ‘n’ Roll in Britain called “Roots, Radicals and Rockers - How Skiffle changed the World”, to great acclaim, so great was it that the book stimulated the production of a one hour TV special entitled “Rock Island Line - the Song that made Britain Rock!” Billy invited the Quarrymen to take part in the filming and we spent a couple of hours chatting and playing in St Peter’s Church Hall earlier this year. The programme went out BBC4  on Friday 12 April at 9:00 pm. Inevitably much of what we said ended up on the cutting room floor but there were plenty of interesting people such as Lonnie’s son Peter, Chas. McDevitt Peggy Seeger, Hylda Sims and loads more to grab your attention.

Then at 10:55 on the same channel there was a repeat of  “Rock ‘n’ Roll Britannia” which featured some clips from a live Quarrymen performance at The Thunderbolt in Bristol, with John Duff Lowe, Len Garry, Colin Hanton, Rod Davis and guest bassist Mike Wilsh.

All this in addition to Colin and Len who appeared in a Beatles related tv programme on Friday 29 April!

Eger Poster small_edited-1

Over the weekend of Sat 11 May 2019 the Quarrymen  appeared at the International Beatles Meeting in Eger, Hungary, just east of Budapest. There is a brilliant Beatles Museum in Eger, but equally important is that  Eger is where the famous red wine - Egri Bikaver - Bulls’ Blood comes from! We had a great weekend in Eger, the audience was fantastic, the museum was fantastic and the red wine was fantastic! What more could you want! Many thanks to Museum Director Gabor for a fabulous trip! To see our entire 56 minute concert on Youtube go to:

Germany 15 -17 Feb

The weekend of 15 - 17 February found Quarryman Rod Davis in Hannover, Aschersleben and Halle, by invitation of the Beatles Stammtisch in the first two cities and by the Beatles Museum of Halle. Rod had been asked to give his illustrated lecture in German on “Liverpool, Skiffle and John Lennon - How it all began”. His talk is illustrated by digitally projected slides and is punctured by Rod singing songs with a guitar at appropriate moments in the story. Many new friends and a few very old friends were in the audiences, including Andrea Noack, who even brought her own washboard and Edmund Thielow, who runs the Beat Archiv in Glauchau, for whom the Quarrymen have performed several times.

Penny Lane 8 March

Our old friends at the Penny Lane Development Trust celebrated their 10 Anniversary on Friday 8 March and we were honoured to be asked to play by Julie Gornell of the Trust. Present were several local councillors and the Metro Mayor of the Merseyside Region, Steve Rotherham, plus staff and Penny Lane residents and a group of visiting Beatles Fans from Canada. Steve Rotherham,  who plays guitar himself, sat in with the Quarrymen on washboard and tea-chest bass for a couple of numbers. We were also delighted to meet up with our old mate Bill Smith, who was the Quarrymen’s original tea-chest bass player way back in 1956 when the group was founded. Bill demonstrated his energetic bass picking technique which has not lost anything over the intervening 60 years!
